Laurinda Hofmeyr has established herself as a South African musician and songwriter who specialises in setting Afrikaans poetry to music.

She originally became known as a songwriter for artists like, amongst others, Laurika Rauch with the composition of music for poems like Ek het ’n huisie by die see, Kabouterliefde and Vir ’n pepermossie. Since then she has produced three CDs – Perd oor die maan (1999), Ligdag (2003) and Reis na die Suide (2008) – as well as many acclaimed productions.

Laurinda chooses poems that resonate with her at specific times in her life. Through her music words by well-known poets like Sheila Cussons, Antjie Krog, Breyten Breytenbach and N.P.van Wyk Louw are brought to life. Laurinda does this in a way that makes the music appealing even to a non-Afrikaans audience.

During performances she sings and plays the piano assisted by some of the country’s top musicians.

In 2008 Laurinda received an FAK award for outstanding cultural achievement.

Laurinda was born in 1967. She took music as subject at Menlopark high school and studied BMus.Ed and BMus Hons (piano didactics) at the University of Pretoria. She has been living in Paarl since 1995 where she also gives piano lessons. She is married to Jantjie Taljaard and they have a daughter, Joanie.
